free downloaded tab interaction not working

Hi, I'm trying to use a free tabs template I downloaded and it's not working.  My buttons have object triggers to 'show layer' when user clicks but on preview, they're not showing.  Should each layer be showing (eye clicked on) in the slide layer pane?  I've tried hiding and showing and the end result is the same, ie. not working but I noticed another free template I downloaded which is working, has only the first and last layers showing (with eye) and still previewing just fine.

A potentially complicating factor is that I have another button set on the same slide (I modified the slide master), however, those buttons appear to be working. Each set has been defined as a button set.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
