Free form drag and drop questions etc

Jun 24, 2013

I am having a lot of trouble with Storyline, it is really frustrating.

Problem 1 -

I have some freeform drag and drop questions.  Even though the drop targets are right, in the results slide, when you can review what questions you got right and wrong, it says that the answers were incorrect (even though they were correct).  I have redone the slide, rechecked the answers in the 'Edit drag and drop' section and it still isn't working. This is happening on a number of my slides.

Problem 2 -

Storyline randomly undoes some of my freeform questions (removes the freeform).  I have had to redo the 'convert to freeform' numerous times for the same slides.  I find that it undoes them after working on other scenes, after saving, or just randomly when I am doing my final check through and proof of the entire project.

Problem 3 -

When I have done multiple choice questions using the already designed templates, it removes the answers so that no answer is selected as correct.  I go through and check every question and their answers etc, and then when I preview the scene, it has no correct answer. Frustrating!

Problem 4 -

It keeps changing the fonts, colours and size of the text in the headings and sub-headings on the templates.  I am going through working on the slides from scene to scene, then do a 'preview scene/project' and some of the slides have randomly different font sizes and colours for the master template texts (like the headings etc).  I am not sure why it keeps changing them but it is so time consuming having to constantly go back and redo every single text box because when I go back and look at the master template, it is all correct. I don't know why it changes it in the scenes etc.

Problem 5 -

A drag and drop (not a freeform, one of the given templates) is not working correctly.  I have checked that the correct answers are to match up to the right answer etc, but then when I do the question in a 'preview this scene', and then go back and look at the 'review quiz' button, it says that the answers are wrong (even though they are right).  I don't know what setting is not right but something definitely is wrong.

I think that is most of the issues that I am having currently.  I have taken pictures of the screen and attached them so that you can kind of see what I am talking about.

I would really appreciate your help.

Thank you

Here is a screenshot of a slide where it does not have a correct response selected.  This is strange because usually, when you make one of these slides, it won't let you save and close it unless you have selected a correct response (so I know that one was originally selected upon making the slide).

By the time I make a few slides, and then preview the scene, there is no correct response selected, its undone.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Laura!

That is definitely quite the collection of issues! So sorry for all of the trouble, hopefully we'll be able to get all of this smoothed out for you quickly.

First, the majority of the problems you've described sound really strange and they don't sound like expected behavior. Before we dive into each issue separately, it might be best to make sure that it's not a problem with the file or the installation that's causing these issues.

Please make sure that you're working with local project files when you're modifying or saving your project:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

Also, can you tell me what version of Storyline you're using, please? To find this information, click on "Help" and "About Articulate Storyline".

If you're not running version 3 (1305.2012), please download and install the update using the link below:

Articulate - Storyline Update 3

Once you've finished installing the update, please try testing the project again. If the problems continue after installing the update, or if you already have Update 3 installed, please let me know.

If you've done all of that, and you still see some or all of these issues, please try importing the original project file into a new, blank Storyline file. If you're not sure how to go about doing this, please take a look at this tutorial

Hopefully this will  help with some, if not all, of the issues you're seeing.

Let me know how it goes! :)

Hi Christine,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply!  Yes, I am known to bring out strange problems with technology, I don't know how I do it though!

I have followed the first few steps you suggested:

- I have re-saved my File onto the local computer (you were right, I was working in a network drive).

- I took out the - from the title of the file  (it only contains two and a half words).

- Upon checking the version I was using I realise that may be a major cause of the problems - I updated storyline last night (when I left the office) and after that (this morning), I was using version 2.  So all day yesterday I was using version 1 I guess, and the update only brought it up to version 2? Anyhow, I followed the link from your message and am currently installing update 3.

I will continue working with the file and hopefully all the issues will be fixed!  Thank you again for the support with the program, it is a great help!  I'll let you know how I go.

PS: My manager suggested that I mention to you (might be helpful with other program users), I am using files that were originally created by other people.  Basically I have received various storyline files that are 90% complete and am going through putting in the finishing touches and then merging them together in one File.  Perhaps there might be issues with how they are originally created as well (E.g. the person creating the file right at the start might be using an outdated version or something? Or I am merging files wrongly?)

I will wait and see how I go with your pointers so far.  I am sure using the right version and saving it in a local drive will help a great deal!

Hi there Laura!

Awesome! I hope that helps with some of the issues, it not all of them, too :D

When you're working with projects created by other colleagues it can be a little tricky. The first thing, and in my opinion one of the most important things to remember, is to not copy and paste any content from one file to another. I'm not sure if you've done this in the past, or if your colleagues have, but a lot of things can go wrong with this method. If you're wanting to merge files, import import import! :)

So, say you have two files and you want to merge them into one. Create a new, blank Storyline course and import from both of those other files. That way, you have the originals saved, and if something should happen you can use them as back up. Also, this method brings over all of your content properly instead of having to deal with changes that can take place when copying to the clipboard of Windows/OS, etc.

I would suggest also making sure that your colleagues are running the most recent version. If you take a look at the list of fixes and improvements for Update 3, you'll see that quite a bit has changed. It's always a good idea to make sure that you're running the most recent version and stay up to date. I do know that we're working on a lot of additional updates as well, so there will be more! :)

Also, if you ever get stuck, or have questions - the community is always here for you :)
