Freeform Hotspot Question Not using correct shape name

Mar 07, 2019

I've noticed that my freeform hotspot questions are not referring to the various hotspots I created by the name I've assigned to them.  This is creating havoc.   Have no idea what to do to build this question.  Is this a new bug?

Hi there, Elizabeth. The hotspots won't use the object name you give them in the timeline, but they should add 1, 2, 3, etc after each new hotspot is added:

Also, the phrasing of your question, "Identify all the switches," makes me wonder if you need to have multiple correct hotspots. The built-in graded hotspot question will allow a single correct answer, and you won't need to include incorrect hotspots, unless you want the hand cursor to appear over false answer choices. If you don't want the hand cursor to give away the correct answer, right-click the hotspot in slide view and uncheck the box "Show hand cursor."

If you need multiple correct hotspots, try using a Pick Many freeform question.

The software is not uniquely naming the rectangles.  I have slides that show multiple rectangles with the same name.  I know this is weird.  It's the first time I'm encountering this, but it's happening (see attachment).  I've had to rebuild the slides multiple times to make it go away.

This is not a pick many question.   There is only 1correct hotspot for the user to click on.  This is a multiple-step question.  Once they pick the correct menu item, the next question is where they have to do the search.

I'm trying to simulate the software to I don't want them to have to click the submit button.  If I don't have hotspots for the incorrect places they can click on in the slide, then I need a submit button.  Am I right?

Thanks for the reply, Elizabeth! I'm not sure why you aren't getting unique names on your objects in Storyline, so I'd like to explore that further in a case with our support engineers. I don't want it to be a hassle to manage multiple shapes on your slides. You'll get an email from us.

In the meantime, I've tried to streamline what you're doing in an example file. You can demo it here -- The correct area is the boy's face. Here's what I did:

  • I placed a very large (incorrect) hotspot over the entire image, and I placed the correct hotspot on top of that. I removed the hand cursors. It may be easier to only work with 2 hotspots.
  • I set the feedback to None, and removed the submit button.
  • I created two triggers: submit the interaction (hotspot) when the user clicks Hotspot 1, and one for clicking Hotspot 2. When the interaction is submitted without feedback, it will advance to the next slide. There are 3 total slides.

I'm attaching the example file so you can have a closer look. Maybe this will work for your setup, too!
