Freeform Hotspot - Track Number of Tries and Communicate Variables to LMS

Jun 29, 2017

I have a freeform hotspot quiz question in which I ask the test taker to select the correct area of an image. The area in the hotspot is correct; anything outside that area is incorrect. I’d like to track how many tries it takes someone to get the correct answer (ex: someone who got it right on the 2nd try vs. someone who got it right on the 15th try). I want to keep the number of attempts unlimited, and have the test taker continue to try until they get the right answer. Then it would move on to the next image where they would have to select the correct area of an image (with all the same details listed above).

I’ve been told that I can set up a custom variable/tracking to keep track of the number of tries it takes a user. On the try again layer, I believe I need to add a trigger to adjust the variable by +1 every time the user clicks the "try again" button on that layer. So that's in essence tracking the times they've tried to answer and got kicked back to the question again. Then I’d like to report this to my LMS (I plan to use Articulate Online as our LMS).

I haven’t been able to figure out how to set all this up (the variable with the hotspot, and then communicating those variables to an LMS). Can someone help? Or can someone lead me to the location of step-by-step instructions? So far this program isn’t intuitive to me (I’m a newbie)!

Hi Phil,

Thanks for your answer. I followed the instructions and set up my articulate 360 storyline in Articulate Online (acting as my LMS). I'm attempting to run reports to get the results from test takers, but I'm once again stuck.

I set it up with a hidden numerical entry field that was set to the value of the variable (which should have been set up to equal the number of times a user clicked the "try again" button--thus equaling the number of tries they took before answering the hotspot correctly). Attached is a zipped folder of my storyline output. Am I doing something wrong? Which report do I run in Articulate Online to get the answer to the hidden numerical entry field? Thank you for your help!
