Game development - loading issue

Dec 28, 2017

Hi

I've just started developing a game in SL360 - I'm in the early stages of putting it together so only have two functional slides at present, the intro slide and the game board slide (which I haven't finished putting the interactions into).

I previewed it a short time ago when I had the triggers/variables in place for setting the user's name and their play piece colour and it was working fine.  Since then, I've renamed the objects on the layer and added a random number generator for the dice.  It's now refusing to play the second slide with the game board on it.  I tried removing the random number trigger, but it still doesn't work.

The slide is pretty simple at the moment and needs to get a lot more complicated.  SL seems to get slow and buggy the more layers etc you add, but I've never had a slide just fail to load before.  On both preview and publish it just shows a grey slide with the spinny waiting cursor.

The .story file attached if anyone can help.  Unfortunately I'm on a very tight deadline with this as it's a concept I'm developing for my masters assignment due on 15th January!  I really need to complete it as soon as possible as I also have to write 2500 words on the development of it by then.

Many thanks

Nicola

Hi Nicola.  I tested your project, and I believe the nurse avatar on slide 2 is what was hanging the preview.  Check out my Peek screencast here.

It's hard to determine why a piece of the course might become corrupted or broken, but this article describes some general best practices to follow when building your courses.

Let me know how you make out...and good luck with your project!

Thanks both! It seems a very odd thing to cause such a dramatic failure :/

I did some testing and it seems to be the initial state that does it. I've completely redone the image (both in terms of re-exporting it from Illustrator, and re-embedding it into SL and redoing the states) and it still hangs if I set the initial state to 'talking', but not if I leave it as normal.  I created a trigger to change the state on timeline start and it now works as I wanted it to so that's a workaround.

Have any of you experienced issues using the 'initial state' setting box?

Thanks so much for your efforts guys :D
