Getting video to pause using layers and triggers

Feb 21, 2018

Hi,

I'm following this tutorial:

https://community.articulate.com/articles/3-steps-to-using-cue-points-to-pause-a-video-and-display-layers

and I think I'm doing everything right but the timing on the video seems to slip each time I play the slide, in that I line up a cue point but the pause seems to be later or earlier on the cue points after the first one and it seems to change each time.

Help please!

Hi Sonal!  Thanks for including your .story file.

I can see that the learner needs to click on the play button to start the video, initially.  So the video will not be synced to the timeline of the slide.  That means the cue points that you set up on the timeline of the slide might not fall where they should once the video starts playing.  The video won't play until the user clicks, but the timeline is still running on the base layer.

I made some small changes:

  • I change the video to play automatically.  This setting will sync the video with the timeline.  Anytime the timeline is paused, the video will also be paused.
  • I moved the play button and its text to another layer that I labeled "intro."  I made a trigger to show that layer when the timeline starts on the slide.  The properties for all of your layers are to pause the timeline of the base layer, so the video will immediately be paused with the base layer.
  • I kept the trigger to hide that new layer when the user clicks the play button.  When that layer hides, the base layer will resume and the video will start automatically.
  • Since the video will be paused with the timeline whenever a layer is shown, you won't need the trigger to pause the video at each cue point.  I deleted those and left the "show layer" triggers at the cue points.

See if that timing is a little closer to what you want.  I think having the video and the timeline synced will make sure the cue points are falling at the same place in the video every time.  Otherwise, the timeline could be playing while the video is paused.

Let me know if that helps!
