Having a timeline variable challenge

Jan 24, 2018

I am building my first course...and need help on slide progression.  On the first slide (only the first slide) I built a variable to prevent the user from advancing to the next slide until the timeline was finished.  Works like a charm.  However, every following slide is doing it even though I don't have that variable condition in the 'jump to' trigger on that slide. What am I missing?

Doesn't a restricted menu only restrict clicking on the menu to move forward?  I don't need them jumping around.  It needs to be a linear progression that they can move backwards on the menu but not forwards.  When I am in preview, the problem I am having is with the next button not working (I am not using the menu to maneuver.)  I can't tell exactly what is going on, but it appears to be waiting to "release" the next button when the timeline is finished (which is what I tried to do on the first slide, but didn't want it to do on the remaining slides.)

Hi Michelle

this article may clear things up:

When you restrict or lock navigation, you can choose whether it impacts just the menu or also disables the Previous and Next buttons on the player. And you can use triggers to override restricted navigation for individual slides. Jump to the following sections for details, depending on what you want to restrict or lock.

Ooh...I thought this might be the solution!  In Storyline 2 under the menu options (where I set it to be restricted) that there is a place to indicate that this should not affect the navigation buttons.

Here is what I was trying to accomplish:

  • They can go backwards to review items (either using the back button or selecting already visited slides) but should not be able to jump ahead three slides and skip a slide - So I made slide advances "by user" with active prev and next buttons, but restricted the menu.
  • On the first slide only, I wanted the next button to be inactive until the timeline was finished - So, I created a variable with a default of 'false', a trigger that changed the variable to true when the timeline ends, and a trigger to jump to the next slide/scene when user clicks next button with a condition that the variable = true.

When I preview my course, the menu restriction works (can only move to slides I have already viewed), but ALL slides won't let me select the 'next' button until the timeline for that slide runs out...even though I don't have the condition or variable in the "jump to next" trigger.

Hi Michelle

sorry I assumed you were using SL360. In SL2 that option to select the navigation isn't available.

So with a restricted menu, the next button is driven by the duration of the timeline. Here is a workaround that  Bobbi Bailey did that may help you or as Leslie suggested, upload your file and we'll take a look.
