Help .story file is gone

Feb 20, 2013

Hello,

So I save all of my files to my local drive, as suggested by articulate, I am not sure what happened but now the .story file is "gone".

I published the module on February 7th and sent it to the client so I have the output and zip.  I have done very thorough searches for the .storyline file and contacted my system adminstrator, who did the same, and also checked the network drives.  My system administrator tells me there is nothing they can do at all because I was not saving  directly to the network ( lovely....I adore getting two completely opposing instructions) and they will not do an active recovery on anyones local drive. I "thought" my information was getting automatically backed up to the network, but apparently the roaming profile is not  active, unless I am physically in the office which I have not been for a while;.

Anyway I am mortified and panicked, is there any solution to this that does not see me redoing everything?  Is there any way at all to extract the .story file from the output or the zip file? If not it means redoing the project from scratch which is daunting......I am very hopeful.

I have put in a request for assistance but have not heard back and time is of the essence so thought I would try this route,  as this is to go to focus group on Monday next week, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Laura.

So sorry to hear about this. I was able to find the case you submitted (#00320078) and I see that Miker is working with you on this. He did sent a request for the zip files, if you're able to provide them. I just wanted to make sure you saw his email. If you haven't received it, please try checking your spam folders or filters.

Unfortunately, unless Miker is able to find some files you can work with in the zip file, you may not be able to work directly with the project. If you're not physically in your office for long periods of time, you may want to consider backing up your project files on a USB drive, or even just email them to yourself. That way, if something happens on your machine in your office, you'll be able to access the files from outside the office and you'll have a back up if something happens.

Hi guys.

please can someone help me?

I have developed a course on Articulate storyline 360, and zipped and uploaded it onto moodle 3.4.

Now there are some changes that need to be made but i dont know how to unzip the output folder to get the raw file.

its such a lengthy course, and i really can not re-do it.

please help!

I too am experiencing this issue. I have the output file, but not the source storyline file. That was lost when IT "converted" out machines to office 365. I need to update/change the course, and i can't because I no longer have the source file. did someone come up with a work-around for this? Would be grateful, as I do not have the time or schedule to re-do the course.

Hi there, Sara. So sorry you've come across this obstacle. The thought of recreating a lost course would make my stomach drop, so I'd like to help in any way I can here.

A couple of thoughts:

  • Is there a way for your IT team to recover those files off the previous environment?
  • Search the entire hard drive for .story file formats.
  • I've seen cases where folks find copies of their files in the temp folders. It's more common for corruption situations than lost files, but it's worth a try! Here's a quick Peek on how to check.

Fingers crossed for a miracle. We're here, too, if you need anything else!

Thank you! It's really nice of you to reply! Unfortunately the course file was lost in an IT conversion, so no temp file or locating it anywhere on my machine. It wasn't anything that Articulate or Storyline caused, it happened because of IT. I happen to have the published packet because I'm able to extract the package from our LMS. I was just looking for a way to extract the storyline file from the packet because that's all I have left.

But thank you, looks like I will be re-creating it, like it or not. At least I know what it "looked like"! :)

Thanks,
