Help with de-selecting

Hello, wonderful Articulate community.  I need some help.  I am building an interaction for a client in which the learner must select 15 values (from 60+ possible options) then narrow down those 15 to 5 final values.  I now need to add the functionality of being able to de-select a value if the learner changes his/her mind.  From what I can tell, I need to do three things:

1. Change the state of each text box back to normal
2. Subtract 1 from the counter in the upper right corner
3. Reset the variable(s) so that a new value can be selected

I am able to figure out #1, but can't get #2 to work, and have not even attempted #3 yet.  Also, if there is a simpler way to approach what I've done so far (I imagine there has to be) then please point me in the right direction.  I have attached the Storyline 360 file.
