Can someone help me? I don't understand....there are great download templates on here; however when I download one I can not "apply" it to slides in my course. I can use it if I "insert new slide", but I already have slides in the course I'd like to apply the template to. How in the world do I do that?

If you insert a new slide and it uses the template you want, then the template is part of your project.
You should be able to select the slides you want to change, select layout from the home tab, and that will bring up all the templates in the project as well as all of the layouts of each one. Select the one you want, and it should be applied to your slide.
You can go into story view and sleect multiple slide, and change them all at once.
