Help with icons and states

Hello all!

Can anyone help me on this slide where I want the icons to appear only as the timeline starts on the rectangles with the text boxes but when the User clicks a rectangle (Essential Function), I want the icon to go away but the text box of the name to stay. So, it's just icons on until they are clicked and then they go away. I have tried everything! I have tried putting them on layers as well as states and can't make it work. The slide attached has my many attempts. 

Any help with this would be much appreciated as I have a deadline looming.
