Help with stopping audio and creating variables

Oct 02, 2014

Hi. I'm working on a project created in storyline that another designer initially created. Now, I've jumped with with my first shot with this program have run into some snags that I can't seem to find answers to on you own.

1. I do not know how to save a user's answers to quiz questions without using the resume option. However, I have been instructed for these questions to be able to refresh, thereby removing all answers. Is there another way around this?

2. Also, I do not know how to stop/pause audio without creating a trigger. I tried to create a variable but I must be doing something wrong. There is only audio on the first of 5 questions. Upon completion they are supposed to be able to review their answers. When it goes back to review question 1 the audio plays again. So, with this, and the refresh issues, I'm not sure what to do to fix this.

I have the file loaded to my google drive if I can get some Articulate assistance to find what I've done wrong.

Thank you!

Hi Julie,

I'm not sure what you mean by your first question - if the user answers the question and clicks submit, and then is brought to the results slide, that should be saving the answers and reporting to your LMS. But it sounds like you want users to be able to go back and look at their answers - have you looked into submitting all the answers at once as described here?

In regards to the audio issue, this article walks you through how to set this up with variables.

Hope that helps

Hi Ashley,

I wasn't clear enough. Once the user clicks submit it does tell them the correct answer. Then they have to click a next button to move forward. A scoring screen appears at the end of the questions and then gives them an option to go back and review their answers. That takes them back to Question 1 - which is making the audio play again. That audio is not supposed to play when they are reviewing the quizzing at the end.

Hi Julie,

You'll want to look into your slide's revisiting properties first - and ensure it's set to resume saved state. I know you mentioned the questions "refreshing" and I'm not sure how you'd like that to behave while allowing the user to resume or review the quiz questions?

Also, variables and triggers can be tricky to set up and diagnose an issue without seeing them - are you able to share a copy of your .story file here with us and then myself and the community can weigh in on what's happening?

Agreed, seeing a .story file would be really helpful.

You want to basically create one True/False variable, name it whatever you want and give the variable a default value of False.

On your first quiz slide, create a trigger that will play the audio when the slide's timeline starts, IF your variable equals False.

Finally, also on your first question slide set a trigger to adjust the variable's value to true when it plays.  This will ensure that your audio only plays the first time through the course, but will not play on review.
