I'm pretty new to Storyline and need to know if there is a way to hide items on the timeline for a period of time that then later reappear. I have a video of someone speaking that runs throughout the slide and I want to go back and forth between the video and items I've added to the timeline. Any advice?
As far as a video being hidden from the timeline, you could use a "pause media" trigger at a certain time in the timeline. Then "play media" when it needs to restart. If you need to have the video hidden for that time, you may need to add a shape to cover it up at the same time the media is paused.
Thanks ,Emily and Wendy, for the reply. I don’t want to pause the video. That needs to continuously run throughout the slide. I want to go back and forth between inserted pictures and the video.
If you need to video to continue to play, I would suggest using a shape to cover up the video. You can drag this shape and the pictures to appear where you need them to on the timeline. This will only work for inserted videos from file or website, if you are using a web object, see here for how those will display with other content.
Yes, I'm using shapes and pictures to cover video. My issue is I'm continuously going back and forth between video and the same picture. Do i need to create a new shape/picture each time I have it reappear?
You can use a trigger to have the shapes/pictures change to hidden/normal when the timeline reaches X time (as Wendy shared above) however, depending on how many times it will need to appear could be a lot of triggers to set up. It depends on what would be easiest, to just copy the same shape and move it around in the timeline, or set up the triggers to change them back and forth.
No the trigger for "when timeline reaches" is only in Storyline 2. You will have to just copy the image in and move them around in the timeline. You could group the shape to cover the video and the picture together.
If the video will be sequential, one option would be to use multiple slides, each with a segment of the video, then have it auto-advance to the next slide where you can have your objects, then proceed to the next video segment.
This also allows you to use slide transitions to have the video do a cool fade-out effect, if you want it.

Hi Dana
there are a couple of ways.
SL1 or 2 Place the objects on the timeline where you want them to come in - you can add a fade in animation so they appear smoothly; or
SL2 put them into a hidden initial state and trigger them to go into normal state when the timeline reaches xx secs.

I have Storyline 1. Will that work with SL1?
Thanks for th info Dana,

Thanks for all the suggestions! I ended up copying the picture and inserting multiple times. Time consuming, but it worked!
Glad to hear you got this working Dana!
