Highlighting text or placing cursor in essay question answer field

Aug 24, 2012

I have a published storyline file that I am using as an uploaded SCORM package in Moodle.  Everything works well except for the essay question answer box.  When attempting to highlight parts of the answer that has been typed, (the user may highlight a single word, for instance, to delete or edit a typo) the highlight immediately switches to highlighting the entire answer that has been typed.   It is also not possible to use the mouse to place the cursor at a certain point within the text, this also leads to highlighting the entire answer.  The user can still use the arrow keys on the keyboard to bring the cursor to where it is needed, but the functionality of the mouse within the answer box is almost useless, aside from clicking in the field to begin typing an answer.

This is a major pain for people using this course!!  Please help!

HI John,

Are you experiencing the same thing on courses outside of Moodle? Like in a course published and uploaded to the web, for example? If you'd like, we'd be happy to take a closer look at this. Please submit a case using the link below so our support team can assist you further:

Hi peter,

I have a similar issue:

purpose: examination of delegates which use another piece of software to do an analysis and then write the answer in essay type boxes for review by course tutor once submitted.

quiz type: essay boxes.

software: storyline

LMS: Articulate LMS

situation:  a delegate starts writing a response to a question, and then switches window (alt+tab/going into the analysis package) and then returns to storyline to complete their response.

problem: Upon returning, the un-submitted text in an essay box is all highlighted automatically. If the user is unaware of this, the moment they hit any key, all the previously inserted text is overwritten. This is very bad.

request: switch off the automatic highlighting in essay type boxes.

many thanks,

Dennis.

Hey Dennis, welcome!

And thanks for bringing this up. I'm able to replicate what you describe using Internet Explorer 9. Have you experienced this in any other browsers? I'm going to go ahead and add this to a previously reported issue (original post), and we'll try to handle this better in future updates. I'll update here with any further information. Thanks again!

Hi Pete, thanks for reply.

We have conducted today a beta test with 8 delegates.

the above mentioned request has now got another added issue.

Browser: Google Chrome, and replicated on IE9

question-type: essay box

situation: text is being entered by a delegate, which is more than fits on a single screen, thus the scroll bar appears and the user continues typing in text. the user clicks NEXT or leaves the application and wants to come back to add more text. As we know all the text is highlighted, so the user hits the arrow right key to unselect the text. The user realises they wanted to edit something at the beginning of the essay, thus they scroll up.

Problem: but every single time they then try to click in the text, it selects it all; even when they first hit arrow right, and then click arrow left or arrow up key. it does NOT scroll back to the beginning of the essay, but only to the top of the scrolled down page. Thus they cannot edit anything in a simple meaningfull way.

This is a showstopper I'm afraid.

Request: any chance of disabling this "highlight all" soon?

thanks,

dennis.

Thanks for the additional information, Dennis. I'll add this to the ticket. This does all seem to be related to the initial issue that our team has been able to fix, and we're eager to roll that update out to you as soon as we can. I can't offer a specific date, but I'll be sure to let you know as soon as it's available. You may also want to subscribe to the Word of Mouth blog to receive news about all things articulate.
