Hot Spots Fail Second Time Through a Path in FireFox

Feb 15, 2018

I have several courses that I created in SL 2.  We purchased SL 3 and I converted all my courses to the new version.  Everything worked perfectly in SL 2; however, the SL 3 courses are exhibiting a bit of a problem when you go through a branch and try to go through it a second time in the same session.  In my design, there are a few intro screens followed by a menu of choices.  When you select a choice and go through all the screens in the path, the hot spots work just fine.  They take you to the next screen in the sequence.  When you are done with the sequence, you are returned to the menu to make another selection.  If you select the same choice again, none of the hot spots work.  This is in Firefox 32.0.1, and the new Firefox. All other buttons work fine.  Just the hot spots are not.

Hi Inga,

Could we take a look at the Storyline file you created in SL2? Is this only happening in Firefox? Do you know what you chose for the publish settings in terms of Flash/HTML5?

Where are you hosting the course to test it? If you aren't ready to upload to your server or LMS, take a look at uploading to Tempshare or using SCORM Cloud for LMS content.

Hi Ashley -

I wish I could share files, but can't, as they are proprietary. I am publishing in HTML5, and we are running off a server. They were perfect in SL2, but are crashing in SL 3 and we've made so many changes, I can't go back. Anything at all we can do? Any backwards compatibility at all? We have a major delivery in a week.

Hi Inga,

I know you mentioned you're working on a tight deadline, so we want to help you as soon as possible.

I understand you'd rather not share your file, but since it's the best way for us to demonstrate the problem and document a defect, we'd happily accept a .story project shared here privately if you change your mind.

You could also create a quick sample file with the same set-up and send that one to us instead of the original.

I found what the issue was, just in time! I created interactive WBTs of a software program by creating Screen Recordings and bringing them in as Step-by-Step slides, Try mode steps. I then edited the slides to remove the feedback, as I used captions with text to point to exactly where I wanted the students to click to advance to the next slide. I removed the Screen Recording Action 1 element from the timeline in some of the WBTs, but not in all of them. I discovered that it was the WBTs that still had the Screen Recording Action 1 element in the timeline that disabled the hot spots and caused Firefox 32.0.1 to crash. When I removed all the Screen Recording Action 1 elements, I no longer had any problems. Some of the hot spots required that I re-add the trigger to go to the next slide. We have some pretty strict requirements - could not use Flash and published in HTML5, and had to use the ancient Firefox 32.0.1. Not sure if anyone else has had a similar experience, but here's the solution!!!

Hi Inga,

Thanks for that update and we'd still love to take a look at the file. Even if it's not your original, but one where you can recreate the issue that'll help us test and troubleshoot. It's important for things like this that we test with the same settings and set up that you've used. Just let us know if you're able to share here or with our team here.
