I was setting the tab order in my course and noticed that hot spots don't show up in the tab order list. They're marked as "Accessible" but don't show.
Bob may be referring to the accessibility alt text option; "Object is visible to accessibility tools."
I don't think hotspots are accessible. Tried it with Chrome Vox and NVDA and they don't detect it. They won't show up in the tab order. I had to use shapes instead of hotspots.
I do hope that they make it screenreader/keyboard accessible though.
Chino, no... I'm referring to the Tab Order list under the slide panel. Tab order shows all the accessible objects on screen and sets the tab key selection order.
Julie - Hot spots are basically just another object on screen - they should technically be accessible. Seemed logical to me anyway.
Rio - Yes, That's exactly what I'm referring to. I selected the hot spots, checked them off to be accessible to a screen reader, gave them "alt tags" but they don't show up, nor can you tab to them.
My question for the Articulate team is "why are hot spots NOT be accessible to a screen reader?"
I guess I'll reset my screens and program them to work using shapes AND put in another feature request.
I don't have the exact details but I think hotspots are not accessible in any authoring tool. I believe it is because they rely on javascript. Javascript and accessibility features do not play well together. So hold off on your feature request until staff chimes in. It may not be an issue they can solve.
We have some Storyline slides that have the hot spot for popup information. Hot spot is invisible and won't be accessible, true. But it has a behavior on it. We may use a highlighted box to indicate that is an interactive item but we also need a hot spot to execute the action. Now, when the tab is on the highlighted item and key Enter, there is no action at all. Our Storyline slides couldn't pass the client's 508 test.
How does the Storyline handle such 508 issue that is very popular on html page.
We've been using transparent shapes. When the course is initially designed we set the transparency down to 80% for positioning and QA purposes. Once everything is working trouble free we go back and set the objects to 100% transparent. Works great so far.

Hello Bob,
When you mentioned that the hotspots are missing in the tab order list, are you referring to your timeline?
I am very much interested in checking what may cause the hotspot to be missing, can you post your course as well?
Thank you very much and hope to hear from you soon
Hi Bob,
I'm curious where it is marked that hotspots are accessible. I don't think they can be read by a screen reader or accessed by the keyboard.
Cheers,
Julie

Hi Bob
reading this - I'd say because a hotspot is invisible it can't be read by a screenreader - I may be way off the mark though.

Hi Wenquing
instead of using hot spot for popup information - you could use markers or transparent shapes
Good idea! Thank you.

Don't forget to add your "Alt Tag" info to them.
