Hotspot questions not returning correct answer

Jun 25, 2015

I have converted a simulation into a freeform hotspot question. For some reason, when i click on the correct answer, I still get the incorrect layer. Can someone please help?

The problem I have is that the standard Player 'Submit' button does work OK with multiple hotspots but if I turn the 'Submit' button OFF in the Base layer and use my own custom 'Submit' button, the question always returns 'Incorrect' answer. My 'Submit' button Trigger references the Hotspot.

However, all the other question slides I have created using my custom 'Submit' button DO work OK. (True/False, Multi-Question, Multi-Answer, Matching and Sequence.) It's the Hotspot question type that doesn't work.

Hi Leslie,

Thanks, I attach a very simple test .story file of four slides. They were all created from new slides, under 'Quizzing'. None was created as a 'Free form'.

Slide 1a - Click a single hot spot on a picture, using the default Storyline Submit button. This works correctly.

Slide 1b - Same as slide 1a except the Base layer has the Submit button unchecked and I added my own custom Submit button, with an attached trigger to submit the hot spot interaction when clicked. This interaction only ever returns an Incorrect reaction. It looks as though Storyline is marking the XY cursor position of the custom Submit button (not the XY cursor position of the first choice they made) and so it will always mark the user’s choice as Incorrect.

Another example ...

Slide 2a - Click one of two images (the 'Pick one' template), using the default Storyline Submit button. This works correctly.

Slide 2b - Same slide as 2a except the Base layer has the Submit button unchecked and I added my own custom Submit button, with an attached trigger to submit the 'Pick one' interaction when clicked. This also works correctly.

Summary

Unless I have missed something here, the 'Hot spot' interaction slide will not work with a custom Submit button. It looks like a bug.

Are you aware of it and if so, when will this be fixed? All my other question types use a custom Submit button without problem (because none of them uses the cursor position as the user's 'answer'). I can't use the Storyline default Submit button just for Hot spot questions.

Hi Tim,

This isn't a bug, but just the way hotspots work. Since it's just tracking a users click on the slide, if they click off the hotspot to a custom submit button their selection has changed. The reason a pick one behaves differently is that as the author you chose what they can select or click on, vs. a hotspot where the only identifier you include in the form view is the correct hotspot. It's been discussed previously and lots of users shared they had success with that custom submit button appearing on a layer.
