Hotspots not allowing clicking on custom navigation buttons

Jul 24, 2014

I have several slide that ask the user to click on a specific area of the slide, with hotspots that trigger the "Correct" layer when they click the right spot, and the "Incorrect" layer when they click anywhere outside the hotspot.

I've also created custom Next, Prev, and Exit buttons, placing them on the active slide window & hiding the default Next/Prev & Volume buttons to maximize the slide widow space.

What's happening is if you try to click on any of the custom buttons such as Exit, it simply displays the "Incorrect" layer rather than activating the custom button, because it's considering that outside the hotspot area. The only thing that DOES work is it lets you click on the default grey Topbar area, so I CAN click on my "Menu" option to bring up the menu and switch slides that way.

Isn't there a way to make the hotspot trigger Show Layer Incorrect when the user clicks outside the hotspot, But still allow clicking on the custom navigation buttons I've made?

It won't let me place my custom buttons in the grey lower/upper default navigation areas (which I had wanted to hide to maximize space). I wouldn't mind user their default navigation areas if they only allowed you to customize those areas and customize their default navigation controls.

In the Trigger Wizard the Action is to Show Layer "Incorrect" When "User clicks outside" hotspot. Is there a way to define the "outside" area so that excludes my custom navigation buttons? It would be silly to have to draw two hotspots---one for the correct answer, one for the incorrect region. I suppose that would work, but it would mean a lot of extra work.

Any suggestions welcome...thanks!

Hi Ray,

Welcome to Heroes!

Based on what you're describing, this is to be expected as the button is on the screen itself and therefore a clickable area. You may want to review a few other threads where it looks like users dealt with similar situations such as this one and it looks like Alex also helped you out in this one.

Good luck with your project!

Hi Ashley!

I'm having problems in Storyline 1 with the trigger "When user clicks outside hotspot". It's showing me the incorrect feedback layer when I try to click Storyline's built in player controls- like the menu!

I've been looking for answers on the forum but they seem to only pertain to custom navigation controls, whereas my problem is the menu in the top part of the . Is this unusual and is there any way to fix this?

Thanks!

Hi Tara-Anne,

It does sound unusual - so first, I'd like to confirm you're working on local project files as described here. Are you seeing this with all your files? If so, I'd also look at conducting the repair here.

If you're still having difficulty, could you share your .story file here with us so that we could take a look at how it's behaving?

Ashley- thank you for your quick response.

I'll give you a little context: I was brought in as a consultant to fix bugs in someone's Storyline project. I got a huge whiff of possible corruption of the file straight from the get-go, and I did find out that they are saving and publishing on the network drive. *cringe*.

Thank you for your confirmation on the matter!
