Hover over Hot Spots not working as expected
Feb 28, 2019
I have some triggers based on hotspots. The idea is that when the user hovers their mouse over a region in an image, a call-out will appear with additional details.
In the Attached file, the final layer "CrimeTypes" has several hotspots placed close together. Each hotspot changes the state of a a callout from hidden to normal, and then restores on mouse leave.
The issue with the lower cluster of hotspots, callouts are appearing, disappearing, don't go away or stay indefinitely. I'm not sure what's happening here. This concept has worked for me in the past.
If I move my mouse slowly over the hotspots - it's okay (sometimes). If I move my mouse like most users would - the elements just pop-up and disappear quickly. I've noticed that if I hover my mouse in an 'upward' direction - things work. If in a 'downward' direction the elements just do a quick 'flicker'.
My apologies for the messy slide. Maybe there are other options, ideas or best practices to achieve the effect I'm looking for. Any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tom, this is really odd. I can reproduce exactly what you are describing. I tried changing them from hotspots to transparent rectangles and the same issue happens. I tried making them a bit smaller. Tried removing the outlines. I can't seem to correct it either.
They seem to function as expected when you move your mouse from the bottom of the slide upwards past each hotspot, but not when you move the mouse down and/or from the side. It's sporadic then.
Hoping a staff member sees this post or someone else has an idea. This seems like an quirk.
Alternatively you could put a button/shape/arrow beside each and tell users to click on them. Have the bubble with text change state to normal. Then a button on the bubble text for the user to click to change the state back to hidden. Not ideal as that creates many more clicks, but the overall function would be smoother.
(sorry, wish I had a better answer)
Hi there, Tom. I noticed that the hotspots were very close together. I moved them apart by a pixel or two, and they seemed to trigger the rectangles on hover much better. I've attached your project file. Will this work for you?
I'm not sure of the "why" or the expected behavior yet, but I'm going to dig into it a bit further to find out what was happening. I'll let you know what I discover.
Thank you Crystal and Tracy. Unfortunately it is still behaving unexpectedly.
I appreciate any feedback or solutions that may come of this. For the time being, I've switched everything over to "click" actions instead of hovering.
Hey Tom,
Here's a Peek screen recording of what I saw when I tested the file Crystal attached above. If that doesn't match what you're seeing, could you share a similar Peek? We'll be standing by!
Hi Alyssa - See this video. As you can see, as I move the mouse in a downward motion, the change in state on mouse-over is not working. However, as I move the mouse in an upward motion, it works - much better. I've attempted several different variations of mouse movements to better illustrate the issue.
This issue is present in SL Preview mode, in exported versions (web, CD, LMS) and in Articulate Review.
Hi Tom,
Thanks so much for recording that Peek – now I can clearly see the issue on my end, as well.
I'm going to share this with our Support Engineers to get further insight into why this is happening. They'll reach out to you via email as soon as they've tested your file.
Hi all,
Just wondering if there is an update on this issue please?
I have seen Tom's video and am also experiencing the exact same issue with hover over on hotspots. Just wondering what the fix is for this?
Thanks
Hello Anna and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)
I took a look at Tom's case and an issue was identified that has been shared with our team.
I'm attaching this issue to the report as we track user impact, but I do not have a solution or workaround to share at this time.
I wanted to share some information on how we define bugs and how we tackle them when they occur.
Hi Leslie,
Thanks - How do we receive notification that issues or bugs like this are fixed?
Is there another feature or other functionality in articulate that can be used instead to deliver the same thing? I would still like the user to roll the mouse over and the image to display.
Thank you.
Hi Anna,
When a bug is confirmed here in the ELH community, we link the discussion to our team's bug report so that we can share any updates once it is closed. We do similar for feature requests, and popular requests are often featured on the What's New, What's Next page.
Also, each tools version history includes mention of the released features and bugs. For example, you'll find those for Storyline 3, build 3.6.18134.0 and Storyline 360, build 3.25.18088.0 linked.
Great news, everyone!
We fixed the issue where the Normal state would blip when hovering over a hotspot downwards. Here's how to update Storyline 360 to see all the recent enhancements and fixes.
If the problem reappears, please record a Peek 360 screencast for me and I'll be happy to help!
