How can I allow learners to leave a Short answer survey Text Data Entry box blank and progress without having to submit?

May 15, 2019

Hi I'm trying to create a form on one slide (using guidance from this https://articulate.com/support/article/reporting-articulate-storyline-variables-to-an-lms-sl2 ). However not all fields are mandatory, so if they're left blank the survey slide pops up with the default Articulate message of 'you must submit a response'. Any help please?

Hi Rebecca,

It would help to take a look at what you've set up to offer specific advice!

The article you linked to indicates a survey question or a text entry, and all question types would only have one text entry field per slide. It sounds like the built-in one is not being answered and showing that error message to the learner.

If you're able to share a copy of your .story here with us we can take a look and offer some ideas!

Rebecca,

You might want to try using a trigger to set the value of the non-mandatory question when they click your button to submit.  If they don't answer the question then you would put in a value for the learner.

The value could be a space so when viewing results data you won't see anything there.  If you want it to be obvious you could even say something like "user didn't respond."  Here is how it would look:

Notice the condition - it says 'TextEntry == Equal to.'  This will change to whatever variable you're using in capturing your question (TextEntry2 for example).  The Equal to value will be blank when adding your condition.
