Changing shapes seems to work with any shape in the format tab, however it does not work when I decide I'd rather choose a rectangle than a text box. It's simply annoying to insert a new shape and then copy & paste.
I thought the easiest way to explain how to change a text box into a rectangle (or any other shape) would be to demonstrate it on a video. Have a look at this quick demo, and let me know if that's what you had in mind!
