How do I add a PDF window to the course screen (not an attachment or resource)

Oct 12, 2020

In our training we are requiring that users read and acknowledge our Code of Conduct. I would like to have the screen explain the COC requirement, then have a button to "View the COC". The button would open a scrolling pdf window on the same screen. The pdf window would have the abilities of a regular pdf viewer, meaning you could download or print the document. The course would have a hard stop at this point; you wouldn't be able to progress unless you opened the pdf window and downloaded or printed the doc. I've seen this done in other training, and wondered if it was possible using SL360. Here's a screenshot of a similar screen:

Any suggestions? Would the PDF have to be inserted as a web object?

Thanks for your help!

Hey there, Michelle!

How do I add a PDF window to the course screen?

That's a great question. A couple of ideas for what you're looking to do:

  • Like you shared, you can use a web object to display a PDF within a course: Adding Web Objects in Storyline
  • Display the PDF in a lightbox: All About Lightboxes
  • Another thought is to copy the text from the PDF and paste it into Storyline's scrolling panel. You can format the text with headings to make it easier to read, and everything is contained in one slide. David Anderson covers how that could work in this 2-minute video:

Those are just a few ways. You can see all 3 ideas in action in this Review 360 link & download the source file below.

I can't wait to see what else the community will suggest!
