How do you locate an existing .stroy project

Sep 14, 2016

I created and published a project using Storyline 2 in Aug 2016.

I now need to go back into the project and update it.   When I open the Storyline 2 app the project does not show in the Recent column.

When I select the Browse for More option the only file that shows up is the -storyline output.  I cannot edit this...

I cannot find the .story version of this project anywhere.  Storyline had to of saved the .story version somewhere?   Why does it not show in the recent column?   Anyone have any ideas for me.  I have exhausted all search options I have.   Thank you

By default the .story files are stored in the My Articulate Projects folder under My Documents, but you can change that location when saving. Is it possible you saved the .story file to a flash drive or other external drive? Or that you created it while logged into  your computer as another user? Each user has his or her own My Documents folder.

If you have administrator access on your computer, you should be able to browse other users' folders and files. In Windows, the users' folders appear in C:\Users -- you could open the other user files and search their My Documents folders.

If you are not an administrator on your computer (common at some companies), you might need someone from IT to assist you with this last option.

Hope this helps!

Hi Jen,

Thank you for the response... unfortunately the project is only stored in the Documents Library as a Storyline output folder.   The .story file is not there.   I have searched hi and low through the computer folders for this .story file ... it just does not exist.  I am surprise that it does not come up in the Recent column when I open Storyline.

Is there a way to open the storyline output file for editing?   I am afraid I am going to have to recreate this whole thing.... soooo bummed as it took a very long time to create.

I don't know any way to do that and I don't think that Articulate provides support for working backward from published output. You had to have a .story file at some time. Is it possible you created this on a different computer and copied your published output to this one? I understand how frustrating it would be to have to recreate the module, so it might be worth some digging through any other places (flash drives, Google Drive, Dropbox) you might have saved it.

Hi Chris!

Last resort.

There may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

Hi Kati,

The "My Articulate Projects" folder is where all the published output and contents will go. The .story files are to be saved locally but there is not a defined default folder. Mine often save to my Downloads folder since that is where the majority of my .story files appear automatically (downloaded from ELH).

You could try searching for them by file extension alone on your computer.
