how to advance without hitting Enter key

Oct 03, 2013

Hello,

I'm using Storyline to create a try it simulation of SAP transaction. My learners needs to type some text in a text field and advance to the next slide without hitting enter.

Is there anyway to do this, I have tried trigger > user presses a key, but this does not work unless the field requires only 1 letter or number. If anyone have experienced this and found a way could you please share your solution?

Thank you.

Hi Purevsambuu,

Here's how Storyline handles the Enter key in data entry fields:

*  If the data entry field is tall enough to accommodate more than one line of text, the Enter key will add a line break (return), so the user can start a new paragraph.

*  If the data entry field is only tall enough for a single line of text, the Enter key will assign the user's response to the text field's variable. In other words, it will submit the user's response.

This article has more information. When you're creating the simulation, do you use the Enter key to submit the text? If so, that part will be recorded as well and included within the simulation. After inserting a screen recording into your story as step-by-step slides, you can add, edit, and delete slides as usual, and you can modify the captionshotspotsdata entry fieldsfeedback layers, and mouse movements that Storyline automatically generated for you during the recording process, and this tutorial walks you through some general editing capabilities within the screen recording that may help you.

Thank you Ashley for your help. I am trying to do Try it simulation on SAP system. As shown on the image below, a user is required to fill in all the fields and click on the green tick on bottom of this window. So there is no enter key between each text fields. Also, I did not use enter key during recording, because in SAP if you hit enter before all the required fields are filled, you'll get an error.

Hi Purevsambuu,

Thanks for the additional information. If you've recorded this within Storyline using our screen recording feature it should pick up that you used your mouse to get to the next section and click on that green arrow. If not, could you use the built in Next/Prev buttons from within the player or did you remove those?

If you're able to share the .story file here with the community we're happy to take a look. If you'd prefer to share it privately, you can also share it here.
