I'm building a series of modules and rather than asking for the student's name in each module I want to know if there's a way of retaining the students name between modules for display in later modules.
By "later modules" do you mean separate courses? Or do you want to show the student's name throughout a single course?
If you want to show the student's name throughout a single course, you can certainly do this. You'd use a variable and display the name with some text on a slide. If you haven't already, you may want to take a look at our tutorial on Adding Text Variables.
If you're wanting to pull the student's name into separate Storyline courses, I'm not sure if you'll be able to accomplish this. As far as I know, there isn't a built in feature for pulling text from one course into another.
Definitely the latter as I only want to prompt for their name and other details once and have this available through a number of courses. Surely, other people have this need too as it seems like a logical requirement for multiple courses.
The only alternative I can see is to build one massive .story file with all the various courses in the one file but I think that would be too unwieldy. Your thoughts please.
I looked at javascript as an option but can't find any reference to this sort of functionality and am not a javascript expert.
I'm afraid I wouldn't be much help on the JavaScript side, either. Sorry about that. Even if you had the courses inserted as web objects into one course, I don't think you could pull the variables or names over into them. At least, not with a built-in feature. Since there hasn't been a lot of response to this, you may want to consider posting over in the Building Better Courses section of the forums. Perhaps a little extra exposure to your question will get you some additional suggestions for this.

Question...I followed the tutorial for the text entry variable. However, I have it set so that the student enters the name on the base layer of the slide and then proceeds to a slide layer, where I would like their entered name to show. However, the text box with the reference does not appear on the new slide layer. Is it not possible to have a student enter their name and have it show up on another layer of the same slide?
I would like to keep it all on one slide as I have a sound component that I want to run through the entire slide (from their entering of their name to reading the directions for the activity...
I copied it to another slide (to make things easier to time) which changed the variable name...updated the variable name and the reference...now it works...
