How to avoid SL's loading

Jul 16, 2020

Hi everyone,

I am working on a fairly big SL project that draws questions from a 100-question question bank.

The file works fine in SL, but once I publish it to Review or upload the project into our LMS, the project seems to need a lot of loading time between slides (with the player showing "...").

Now, I am using a lot of slides and of course there's some wild action with triggers, so there certainly is a lot to be calculated - but is there any way to smoothen things up and avoiding that "..."? It appears randomly between slides and really throws the learners out of things.

Unfortunately, I can't lessen the amount of triggers, variables and slides needed for this one.

Hello Ina!

Sounds like an impressive build! I'd love to help!

Let's start with understanding where the lagging occurs.

  • Have you tried using a different browser?
  • Is it only the question slides where the transition is slow?

If you're comfortable sharing your file, it would be helpful to test it out on my end. You can either attach it to this discussion or send it to me privately. Either way, I'll take a look and share my findings!

Hi Lauren,

I'm very sorry for my late reply - we're insanely busy right now.

To answer your questions:

  • Yes, I've tried using a different browser, but with the same lagging. Most of us are working with Chrome.
  • My project has no feedback layers, so yes, this only occurs with the question slides.

I'll attach the file below. It's running much better on Review, so this might be an issue of the LMS we're using.

But I've recently encountered this problem with a second project. This one only uses 15 questions, but is MUCH slower (in our LMS as well as on Review) in showing the question slides (this project uses feedback layers, those are fine). There's some wild action with variables and states, I guess that's where things get held up. I'll upload that one as well. If you have any tips on how to build this one slimmer, I'm all ears.

Thanks in advance! :)

Not sure if the loading has changed, in question banks storyline has to load all the questions before it performs the randomisation, so it will take longer to load question banks.

Also some LMSs validate every file which can slow everything down, instead of asking the question is the user allowed access to this folder, it asks the question does the user have access to each file.

Hi Leslie,

your support contacted me, thank you. We used SCORM Cloud to check the files and it seems the slight lag in Project1 is related to our systems.

Project2 is a different story though. It doesn't get any loading "3 pulsing dots", but is still a bit slow. I guess that's not SL's fault per se, but rather how the course is built. I'll start another thread to gather some ideas on how to imprive the built.

Thanks for your help :)
