How to change slide properties in case of revisiting

Mar 08, 2017

I'd like to set different properties on a slide if it's revisited, I mean if it's watched for the first time it can't be possible to go forward if the timeline is not ended yet, but if it's watched for a second time I need that is possible to skip it to next slides.

This is particularly important when I set a quiz: if the answer is correct it goes to the next slide but if is uncorrect it goes back to the first slide but you should be able to skip slides till the quiz appear again and a new answer can be given again.

Thanks

Thanks for your answer, actually yesterday I found this topic useful too https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/how-to-lock-unlock-navigation-in-a-course, expecially the second  answer from Judy, but today nothing worked anymore, I'm still trying to use variables but it looks complicated to solve a function that with another software I use to set with just a click...

The thing is that after several attempts I made it to work setting "restricted" navigation restrictions and just the trigger "jump to next slide when the user clicks the next button or swipes next" for each slide. This make the user to click "next" to jump each slide after watch them for the first time, and this is not a good thing at all...but is the only setting that can make everything work... but I really need to avoid this thing of the "next" button as my company sells courses several hours long and this could be very annoying for users...

I tried with variables but I don't think it can do the job properly...

Hi Giulia,

If you want to share a copy of your .story file that's often the best way to have the community or staff take a look at what you've got set up and then offer some advice around those specifics. I know for me variables were a bit of a learning curve, and still I have to "see" it to be able to figure it out.

You’ll want to upload the .story file here (which is the file prior to publishing) using the “ADD ATTACHMENT” button at the bottom of the forums reply window.

Ok, so this is my best result so far.

I kind of forced it to go forward by itself, without have to press the next button for each slide, then you can navigate into the slides after you've watched them from the menu list, as I didn't solve it with a trigger....but now you have to whatch completely the slide before the question before you can repeat it again...

I know that it looks annoying but it could be that that slide is 10minutes long and the user would hate us...

This is the file I talked about in the previous answer, the problem here is that everything is ok but I need to avoid to press "next" each slide during the first view...the slide should skip to the next one just as the timeline ends...

If I go back as the quiz attempt falis, I should be able to use the next button and skip slides instead.

Hi Giulia,

I took a look at your course and the slides and I'm not clear on what you've set up or would prefer. Are you looking for the user to only advance using the next button after they've seen it once before (ie. when they first go through it the questions are advanced automatically? I don't know that you'd want the questions advancing automatically on the first attempt, as what if they user hasn't had a chance to answer them yet? If you're looking to have it happen when they revisit, such as a review - you may want to look at the custom review layer you could add and then include a trigger on that one to jump to next slide when the timeline ends or something?

Let us know if you're giving that a try and still running into issues with it.

Thank you for your answer Ashley,

My goal is to create a course with slides advancing automatically, then once in a while a question appear and the user must give the right answer to go further. If the answer is wrong, the presentation will go back to the first slide to let review the contents they missed, but this time they could use the next button to skip the slides quickly.

In the first file I attached, the problem was that at the frist vision the slides go on automatically  when the timeline ends (ok) and after anwering question you can navigate trough the slides already watched only from the menu (not ok)

In the second file the problem is that at the first vision too, you have to click the next button to go to the next slide, and this is not ok.

Thank you very much Leslie!

I opened the file and it works exactly how I asked to, I'll analyze the variables and triggers you used to understand better how I can improve my work.

I actually reached a very similar result, in the meantime, using buttons, it works pretty good, but yours is exactly the result I meant from the beginning.

Thank you very much again!!

Hello, I'd like to ask you a further question about this preset presentation.

Do you think is it possibile to set this presentation as a standart template and import a Power Point file in it? With all the variables and all different for each slide? I know I'm asking something almost impossibile, but I'm working on a very large amount of slide and it would be great if I could preset something more, thank you.

Giulia A

My doubt is, can I import all the variables and functions with a template? Or only the slide layouts?

The thing is, if I can import a "content" slide with the right variables, but I have to customize them for each new content slide I'll create (as I need a different variable for each content slide), is nothing much different from the work I'm still doing now.

I currently use to open an existing project, save as a new file and change the slide contents, so I have several preset variables; otherwise I can try with a template if I can automatize this process.

Hi Giulia,

Templates will allow you to work with custom design, placeholders, animations, and interactive objects whereas slide masters will focus on themes, colors, fonts, text, and objects (and triggers you've added on those slides.

It sounds like if you're recreating variables, perhaps slide masters or setting up a standard .story file that you can use as a starter file would be the best option for you? The .story file can be a normal file with those slides, triggers and variables in place and you'll customize it from there following your "save as" method.

I'm not sure how much automatization you could include, but that may be a great question for any instructional designers here in ELH!
