How to create text variables without using a text entry box?

Nov 09, 2020

I am quite new to Storyline and wonder how I can create text variables without the need of text entry boxes.

I would like to use text oder string variables to give feedback to the user by displaying different texts in a text box with changing texts.

For example

v_text01 = "Try again"
v_text02 = "Well done"
v_text03 = "Please go on ... "

etc.

I wonder how I can create these text variables without creating a text entry box for each of it.
As a workaround I created some text entry boxes on a page which is invisible for the user but I am sure there is a more elegant way to achieve this.

Help is very appreciated because my Storyline trial time runs out in a few days.

Thanks in advance for your help :-)

Hi Frank,

Happy to provide some help here!

May I ask what kind of slide you are creating? If this is a question slide, you could apply Storyline's built-in feedback layers to provide feedback to the learner. After defining the correct response, specific layers will appear based on how the learner responded. You can find more details about this here:

When you create a text variable, you can give it a default value. Or, you can use a trigger to set a variable to a value. That way, you can use one variable, and change its value according to learner input.

For example, "Adjust variable set v_text01 to value Try again when user clicks Submit_Button if  the state of Correct_Response = Selected."
