In Storyline 2 I'm able to change the button colour schemes but I have chosen a light background for the prev and next buttons and want to change the font colour from white to black. Is there a way to do this with the built in navigation buttons without having to create custom buttons.

In Player Properties, select Colors & Effects. Then click on Show advanced color editing and chage the color for Button >> Text.
