How to exit Try slides

Nov 22, 2018

I cannot figure out how to let a user exit the Try mode.  I would have thought this would be a built-in feature but I can't seem to find it.  I created a master slide with buttons allowing the user to go back to the lesson or main menu, or just exit the course.  I apply them to the slides but nothing happens.  All I can think to do is to cut-and-paste these buttons onto each of the hundreds of slides I will be using in my course.  Is there something I am missing?

My second issue with Try - and reason that I need people to have an exit option - is that it will not allow me to let the user enter any text they choose rather than exactly what I typed in the video.  I have some lessons that require me to enter a long string of text in the demo but I don't need the user to reenter it word for word.  In fact, it would be much more preferable if they could enter their own words, as that is a part of the learning process.  Is there any way to require a text entry but allow any text the user chooses?

Thanks so much!

Hi Frankie!

It sounds like you added a button to the slide master, and you want this button to appear on every Try Mode slide. What triggers are associated with that button? What happens when you click it?

By default, a text entry Try Mode slide will require a correct answer. For any answer to be considered correct, change the Score field to None. Let me know if that helps!

Thanks so much for the reply!

For the first question: The button would bring them back to the lesson. My modules are structured so as to allow the user to watch a video, jump to exercises, watch ‘step-by-step’ slides, and go to ‘try’ slides. They can do any or all of these. I need the user to be able to exit out of the slides, either because they have gotten what they need and don’t wish to finish the rest or because they are frustrated with the ‘try’ slides. My template buttons can send you to the main menu, the lesson menu, or allow you to exit the program. The problem is that there is just no update on the slides when I Apply Layout. I’ve not had trouble applying the layout on any other type of slide.

For the second issue, I don’t see the option of ‘quiz’ in the try slides. I have clicked on both the hotspots and the slides but can only find quiz options on a ‘quiz’ slide. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks again!

Thanks, Frankie!

First, let's tackle the slide master button. The background image on the Try Mode slides is likely hiding the button. To fix that, go back to the slide master, and cut the button from the base layer. Then create a slide layer on that layout, and add the button to the layer. Back on the base layer, add this trigger: "Show layer [button layer] when the timeline starts on [current layout]".

Now, let's move on to the Try Mode text entry slides. On the right, you should see a button that says Form View. Click that button, and then you'll see the score setting at the top.

Here's a quick video to walk you through all of that!
