Currently, we use Captivate to publish our interactive tool training to allows participants the opportunity to learn in controlled, safe environment (embedded in an Articulate Presenter file). The important part is the interactive component that simulates the tool as accurately as possible.
How can I leverage the SL screen recording function to do this and launch the interactive piece in an external, larger browser window? Thank you!
1. Create your recording in Storyline at whatever large size you want to do the recording in, and publish it, removing any of the player items that you aren't going to want in the new launched window (like menu, title, buttons, etc)
2. Create another Storyline project
3. Insert the project from step 1 as a web object in the project you created in Step 2, and set the web object to open in a new window
Does that make sense?
As a heads up though, you said you wanted to do this for HTML5, so I assume you are targeting the iPad? If that is the case, on the iPad Mobile Safari is locked at a specific size, so the window won't actually be any bigger, but the content will appear bigger in the window because the player frame will be removed.
Thanks very much for the response, I will try out the steps later today.
Re: HTML5 - the primary reason I'm interested in HTML5 is actually not to accommodate mLearning, but because Flash causes significant eLearning delivery problems with the computers in our contact centers. So if I can eliminate the Flash components then the centers can spend less time troubleshooting and more time learning.
Understood - but because we know Flash is the problem in this case, pushing out a few samples created in SL gives me the chance to test any underlying compatibility issues.
What specific issues are you encountering in regards to Flash content? Is it specific to certain kind of content? We could certainly try to help you out with that if it is related to Articulate content.
Typically a result of embedded Captivate videos used for hands-on practice with new products and tools. The core of the eLearning is developed in Articulate while the hands-on simulation is launched in an external browser window. When the Flash launches it usually freezes the computer or some variation of that.
As a heads up, right now the HTML5 player is only supported on Chrome, Safari, and Mobile Safari. We don't support IE (any flavors), or Firefox. IE has some issues just loading our HTML5 content, and Firefox doesn't support MP4 video.
You are certainly welcome to play around with it and see if the HTML5 will meet your requirements, but you might run into some issues with the above limitations.
If you see issues with content freezing a computer in our Flash output please let us know, that should never happen to us.

Hi Bryan,
Here is what I would do:

Hi Bryan.
You might be surprised how HTML 5 support varies from browser to browser. I don't think it's necessarily a magic bullet solution.

Hey Brian. If you do your screencasts in Storyline, I am guessing you won't have this issue, even using Flash.
