How to make a long dash?

Apr 25, 2014

Can someone tell me how to make a long dash in Storyline text box?

I tried the standard alt+0151 but it doesn't work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Renaldo,

The key codes for an EM Dash (long dash) are a bit different in Storyline. You'll want to type 2015 where you want the dash to appear. Then select the number you just typed, press Alt+X to convert it to a dash (it may initially be invisible), and change the font for the dash to Tahoma to make it show up correctly.

You can also insert it from the Symbol dialog in this manner:

  1. Type the text as you want it to appear, but leave out the Em dash. Then place your mouse cursor at the point in the text where you want the Em dash to appear.
  2. Go to Insert > Symbol.
  3. From the Font drop-down, select Tahoma. (Note: You can use the font of your choice for the other text in your course. Tahoma seems to work best for dashes, but feel free to test other fonts as well.)
  4. From the Subset drop-down, select General Punctuation.
  5. In the character map, select Horizontal Bar
  6. Click Insert.
