How to recover Storyline file after hard drive crash?

Feb 11, 2013

Just my luck, my hard drive recently crashed and had to be replaced.  Although I can get back to viewing a Storyline project in progress that was published for web viewing, I can't seem to figure out how to recover the actual file itself, so that I can continue to edit and build my project (which, of course, is huge and it would make me cry to have to start all over again!).  I can see that there are file folders on my computer drives related to this project, but nothing seems to come up in a way that makes it openable and editable.  Please help!

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Michelle!

First, I'm sorry to hear about the crash! Those are never fun!

Have you been able to locate the .STORY file for the course? It should be listed as an "Articulate Storyline Story" for the file type. You can try using the Windows search feature to find this in the folders you mentioned by typing *.story and searching for the file.

Unfortunately, if you're not able to locate the .story file, you won't be able to modify the content of the course. The output files are available for viewing purposes, but not for editing the files.

In the future, though, you may want to consider backing up the courses you work with on Dropbox, or onto a USB drive, etc. Just keep in mind that you'll want the files to be local when you work with them.
