See if this works for you. You can pause the timeline by opening a layer and setting the layer properties to pause the timeline of the base layer. So, I have 3 layers, and three off-screen rectangles on the timeline. The layers open when the timeline starts for each of the rectangles. Each layer is set to pause the timeline of the base layer. When each layer is closed, the base timeline resumes playing.
