How To Track Progress Using Storyline

Oct 14, 2014

I am trying to track course progress with a built in Storyline and packaged as SCORM 1.2. For example, when a user exits the course, I want to be able to report that they are on screen 10 of a 30 screen course and/or that they are 33% through the course content.

Pretty basic requirement BUT, as I understand it, Storyline does not populate "LOCATION". Instead (for some CRAZY reason) they bury the screen number in a blob it calls "Suspend Data" that is not available or decipherable to the LMS. Storyline uses this blob to support their bookmarking feature.

It packages the entire course as a single SCO eliminating that path to me being able to report course progress.

I can't believe that if I build a course in Storyline that there is no way to track progress in the LMS based on information provided by Storyline.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE tell me I am stupid and have missed something obvious and/or that you are BRILLIANT and have figured out a way to achieve my objective.

Thanks in advance.

Hello J!

You can test your content in the SCORM Cloud, the industry standard for testing, to see how this suspend data is recorded. It should show a total time viewed:

If it is not reporting like this in your LMS, you may want to look at the information here about troubleshooting the LMS for tracking.

Also, depending on what LMS you use, others in the community may be able to give some helpful ideas.
