HTML5 output pauses when switching on different tab
Oct 31, 2017
Hello
I've got a little (well, not so little, I have a deadline today) problem here. When I run my project in html5 and switch to another tab, the content on the project tab just pauses. It shouldn't, it definitely shouldn't! My timeline pauses, my layer-timer pauses, but for example audio and videos plays normally.
You know what that means, when I give 30 seconds for answering the question on the screen? yeah, unlimited time! That cannot be accepted.
WHY is it that way? And it seems like storyline output problem, because anything in html5, when you switch tab, will play/animate normally.
Good that if you open in a new window (popup), it will play even if you loose focus on the window. It's just the problem with tabs.
Any solution for that?

Is this a custom tab you created? Is this tab showing a layer? If so, check your layer properties to see if "Pause timeline of base layer" is checked.
when I switch to another tab in a browser. Like when I jump between two tabs in chrome.
Oh I understand now. That could be a function of the published output, or could be browser specific. Hopefully someone from Articulate will pop in here soon for you.
Mateusz, which version of Storyline are you using? It looks like this may have been corrected in Storyline 360, but not yet in Storyline 3: https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/audio-is-not-pausing-while-swapping-the-browser-tabs
Thank you Michael, I will go to the other thread and continue the discussion there :) And yes, I'm using storyline 3
Mateusz, I created a game in which I use a custom timer, rather than the Storyline timeline. This is published from Storyline 3, HTML5 only. I just checked, and when I switch to a different tab, my Storyline audio kept playing and my timer kept running. Would something like that work for you?
Michael, I'm using both - I have 30 seconds of timeline, and when timeline ends, my question automatically submit. Also, I have layer-based timer, counting down from 30 to 1. Both layer-timer stops and timeline. Can you possibly share with me piece of your story file, so I can check?
I used Matthew Bibby's code from here: http://matthewbibby.com/countdown/
He has a full tutorial and .story file to download as well. Let me (or him) know if you need any help with it.
Great news! We just released Update 3 for Storyline 3. This includes quite a few important fixes and some new features as well. Check out all the details in the release notes here.
The item you'll be interested in is:
Audio continued to play in HTML5 output when switching to another browser tab, causing animations to become unsynchronized.
Be sure to download and install the latest version of Storyline 3.
