HTML5 Retry Quiz problem

Aug 10, 2012

Hello,

when I publish a storyline quiz to "Include html5 output", test it on an iPad from a link (not using the Articulate Mobile Player), and click the retry quiz button on the results slide, I cannot select a new answer to the questions. It jumps to the first question and the radio buttons are clear but cannot be selected. It works fine on a PC but not on the iPad. The .story file is attached. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Sherri,

Thanks for the additional information and sharing the file. I tested this in Preview mode and didn't run into any issues when testing the file again on the "retry" I was able to select answers and submit them without having to click in the seekbar.

I also published a copy of this course here to SCORM Cloud which is an industry standard for testing SCORM content.  EDIT: Disabled the link to the course here at Sherri's request.

Could you try again, this time NOT using the Retry button on the Results page, but by following these steps:

1. Click Finish or Next on the Results page.

2. Click on the About the Practice TOC/menu entry.

3. Then click Retry on the Results page.

I've tried this both myself and had a colleague try on SCORM Cloud and we're still seeing the issue I describe above, where the first question won't allow you to choose an answer until after you click the seekbar. This simulates someone who doesn't pass the quiz the first time, but doesn't have time to retake the quiz immediately and then retries after re-entering the quiz from the TOC.

Thanks again for your help!

Ok - so I took a look again and I see you're using a "fake" results layer on your first quiz slide. I removed that element and just redirected to the main results slide using the same type of trigger you had - and then everything worked as expected once clicking on retry (the second visit) and being able to go back to answer the question. It seems like the fake results and the triggers to reset it were causing issues on answering that first question.

Hi,

I'm having this exact problem right now with files for school.  I'm an IDD Grad student and using variables was our homework.  So I set up a quiz in Storyline 2.  Here's the really weird part.  If I just run the quiz, it works.  When I run in conjunction with another scene, it doesn't.  It displays the second try, but you can't click on any answers.  The variable I set up to allow only 2 tries still works and all the changing states happen, etc.  I'm running VM Ware on a Mac but I haven't had any other issues so far.

I would really appreciate any help with this.

Hi Sherri,

What I've heard from a number of our users is that SL2 doesn't like when you "trick it" and therefore can cause these issues as you've run into. Modifying your file (at least this smaller version) took only a few minutes and you should see the change I made the the trigger for showing your results slide, and I didn't remove any of the layer elements either - although you could if you'd prefer.

I guess I should have been more specific when I said this exact problem.  I was speaking about the issue where the user gets to retry the quiz but the answers are not clickable.  The issue which started this whole conversation line 2 years ago.  I read on Articulate's Help page that there was a patch for this for Storyline 1 Version 8.  I've never run Storyline 1.  This was built exclusively in Storyline 2.  My Variables work just as expected - no issues there.  It is the quiz which is not working.  It works if I only run that scene alone but when I combine it with other scenes, it doesn't work.  Does this make more sense now?

Thanks,

Nora

Hi Nora,

If it was built entirely in Storyline 2, again I think we'll still need to see the course as the additional elements you've set up such as variables may be playing a role in the behavior here. Do the other scenes also have quizzes and results slides? Does your set up not work on the second pass as Sherri mentioned - or for each and every attempt?

If you'd prefer not to share your file here publicly you can share it with us here.

Hey Ashley -

Thanks again for your prompt and helpful reply! I've been adjusting the trigger to skip the "trick" layer and i'm no longer seeing the initial issue. However, now I've run into another issue. When I retry the quiz, without exiting the course first, all of the answer options, which are set to randomize, seem to go in order so that the 3rd choice is the correct one on each question. Any idea if this is related to converting or something else? I think if you try the file I gave before, with your fix, you'll see what I'm seeing.

Thanks!

Hi Nora,

Thanks for sharing your .story file here with us. You didn't have a "reset results" trigger on the "retry" button. That would prevent the user from answering again as the course is considered already answered. I added that in to your file (and made sure it appeared in the list prior to the jump to slide trigger) and then it all worked as expected.

Hmmm, wow I didn't see anything about this in the instruction I watched.  Thanks for helping.  Was this something I accidentally deleted?  It doesn't feel intuitive but I guess will get better with practice.  I'm sure I never would have guessed it on my own.  Now I can turn my homework in complete instead of with a caveat!

Hi Sherri,

I don't have the option to  edit other users posts unfortunately but you could delete the individual posts or edit the post to remove the attachment if you wish. I can delete your entire posts here if you wish where there are attachments, but then it would obviously leave holes in the thread. Let me know what you'd prefer or feel free to edit it yourself.

Hey Ashley -

I don't mind at all if the thread stays intact, but I was hoping that you could delete the sample file you posted showing that you removed the trigger to the "fake" results slide and reset it to point to the real results slide instead. Since it has company logos, I just don't feel comfortable leaving the file available for others to download. I was able to remove the file that I had uploaded for you to test, so I was hoping you could also remove the file you had uploaded for me to see.

Thanks!

Also - We're still seeing the issue where on retrying a quiz, the answer options (which should be randomized) all re-order themselves so that the correct answer is in the same position (last option) on every question. Any idea what's causing that? You can see it in the sample file I'm asking you to delete. :)

Sherri Sagers

Thanks Ashley! You are very busy! Just FYI... I also posted to another forum thread about an issue with randomization in Safari browser, but it's not the same issue as the one I asked about here. That issue is only in Safari and the answers become unrandomized when you click the playbar. This issue only seems to happen after retrying a quiz and the it happens both on PC and iPad.

Thanks for ALL your help!
