Hyperlink on a html file on drive C:\ does not work...

Oct 18, 2013

Hi!

Due to the lack of continuous internet access for our employees, we publish our website on the local drive on the employee's computer. When we are trying to link to an html file on drive C  from a trigger in Storyline, it does not work.

I've read this thread http://www.articulate.com/support/storyline/file-path-for-jump-to-urlfile-trigger-converts-to-double-slashes, but it does not solve the issue when the linked file is on a local drive.

Is there any workaround?

Thanks

Ivan

P.S. I've dowlaoded the latest Storyline update and it did not change the outcome.

Hi Ivan,

How have you published your course? The problem you're encountering may be to the fact that they're viewing this course locally (instead of through a web server, LMS, etc.) which can cause some local security restrictions. Additionally, you mentioned that the html files are linked on their local drive - but is the file path the same for everyone - for example if I look at where all my local files are stored, I get a file path such as: C:\Users\ASHLEYTERWILLIGER\Documents.

Hi Ashley!

We are publishing our Quizmaker and Storyline projects to Articulate Online.  Our html files we refer to are located on an unprotected local directory (C:\Program Files\FormationCSF\Espace Formation).  When we establish the link, the backslashs in the adress become double backslash.

Ex :

C:\Program Files\FormationCSF\Formations\Livraisons\131022\livraison_septembre_2013_principal.html

becomes

C:\\Program Files\\FormationCSF\\Formations\\Livraisons\\131022\\livraison_septembre_2013_principal.html

When clicked, a new page appear (we asked the hyperlink to show in a new browser), and two lines of text are written, one completely and the other just the top, no bottom.

The adress in the new window still show Articulate Online and there is  « external link ». It's like the link is called and shown from within Articulate Online.

If I move my mouse over the almos blank page, I can see hyperlinks one after the other. It's like the godd page is there but does not show on the window generated after clicking the link in Storyline.

Other files as .pdf or .doc   work perfectly.

Thanks

Ivan

Hi Ashley!

Unfortunately, it's not working yet.  I tried to link to the index.html file with the same result : only parts of the page appear.

I noticed that the page is loading not in the regular Internet Explorer window, but in a window where the adress is making reference to Articulate Online : http://formationcsf.articulate-online.com/p/2351070323/story_content/external_files/livraison_septembre_2013_principal.html.

So, I tried as a first step  to just load Internet Explorer  (hyperlink = C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe) and Internet Explorer is loading in a separate Windows. Now'I'm seachinig for a way to load after that the complete path to the html file I want to open ( C:\Program Files\FormationCSF\Formations\Livraisons\131022\livraison_septembre_2013_principal.html ).  Without yet any success yet.

It is an issue we'd like to resolve since in exxercises, we want to refer to the exact page where is located the reference document where the answer is for a specific quesiton.

Hi Ivan,

Thanks for sharing your link here, but unfortunately I'm unable to access your course without a username/password. The address for a course published to AO, will refer to Articulate Online as that is where the course is hosted, so regardless of what browser you use to open the course - the Articulate Online will be a part of the file path. Testing published content on your local drive is not something we recommend as you will likely encounter local security restrictions causing your content to behave incorrectly or fail.

The link I shared before from Gerry was to embed a local HTML file into your Presenter course, not to use that to launch your Presenter course locally. My apologies if that was confusing, but based on the first link you shared I thought you were linking to another local html file.

Hi Ashley!

The course will stay on Articulate Online. It's when we want to link to the reference manual from the course that we experience the problem.  The reference manuals are all located on a local drive on the participant's computer.  So I have to refer to a specific html file on a local drive. No problem with security.  From anywhere except Articulate products I can refer to that specific file and a new Internet Explorer browser opens with the right content on it. That's why i'm looking to launch Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe) and if possible to specifiy in the command line where to find the specific html file. I'll report here if I can find a way.

Thank you for your help

Ivan
