I need some improvements to Storyline 2 workflows

Jul 07, 2015

So, it is at the end of the course building. I am fussing over details that, in spite of my disciplined approach, still went askew and now I must meticulously go through each slide and make adjustments.

Here are two major time wasters that I know is costing me a lot of extra, manual work that could be a lot

1) Positional adjustments of elements should be much easier when you are on pixel duty.

First I must select the object. Then I select the Drawing Tools tab. Then I select the Size and Position dialogue. Then I must click the Position tab. Now I can enter x/y coordinates for the object.

The other alternative is click Arrange then select Size menu, then select More Size Options then select

Repeat for every single object I want to align across slides. I would normally use a layout, but on projects where multiple persons are working, this usually goes wrong at some point.

What needs to change? Home tab needs to have X/Y coords as well as Size text boxes. You do adjustments to size and position ALL THE TIME! And it is not drawing, it is composing.

In future, it would be nice to be able to customize direct access to functions you know will be used often, but today they nest in sub-sub-sub menus. I always disliked that about Office products, and it seems Storyline wants to mimic that a little too much.

I appreciate the vision to make e-learning production accessible, but I think some kind of power-user needs must be baked into the system to speed up the workflows you end up wasting too much time on because it is not efficient.

2) Preview on the timeline is slow as a glacial slide. And I mean the old fashioned Ice Age Glaciers, not these newfangled Climate Change glaciers that melt in a decade.

Seeing what you are doing in a Preview is quite intense during animation work. When I click Preview, Storyline thinks about it for about 10 seconds. Too long!

This is just the ones that I run into frequently. Anyone else have some areas they feel could use a "speed up" of workflow?

Hi Soren,

Thanks for reaching out here and engaging the community in a discussion around workflow. As for the first point you brought up, I could see that being a great idea and something I'd encourage you to also share in the form of a feature request as those go directly to our product development team.

As for the second issue with previewing the slide - are you referring to the play button in the timeline or previewing the slide as a whole? Our QA team is aware of some slowness associated with the play button in the timeline that was different than the behavior in Storyline 1, so they're investigating that. In regards to the overall preview - since it does have to render and optimize all the images, audio, etc. I'm not certain there is a way to speed it up - but again a thought you may want to share with our team.

Thanks again - and please let us know if there is anything else we can assist with!
