Icons breaking into smaller parts when selecting

Apr 12, 2018

Hi there, does anyone have the problem where when you click your icons, you can't select the entire icon, but only small pieces of the graphic?  It is like each icon is a grouping of smaller more basic shapes, and I can't seem to group all of the basic shapes into the icon itself. This is big challenge when I'm trying to edit the State of the entire icon.  Please help!

Here's an example of what I mean.

I have an icon where I can select the icon's parts including the whole icon, but can't group the icon anymore than that.   So when I try and edit the state of it, it makes me try and edit the icon's parts.

Hi Lu and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)

That certainly does sound frustrating and I remember having this happen once to me, but I cannot remember what the image was.

At any rate, how about a right-click to save the image as a picture? Then you shouldn't run into that anymore.

Let me know if that helps or if we need to take a deeper look at your .story file.

I'm not entirely sure why those grouped icons act that way.

You have 2 options that I know of... One is to set your icon up at the exact size you wish to use it (or larger) and then save it out as .png file and import it back in.

I managed to set an object with multiple pieces exactly like yours to be just "curves" in an illustration program and then exported it as a .wmf file. Bringing it back into Storyline allowed for editing the entire group at one time vs the individual pieces that you commented one.

I would interested if anyone else chimes in on this.

The simple solution with just using Storyline tools is to export as an image and then import it back to your slide. Otherwise - you have to jump between each piece to edit the states, which is no fun.
