If previous button clicked, when return to slide next button won't show

Apr 05, 2018

Hi,

We have been using Storyline for about 3 months. I frequently use hiding the Next button until the learner has visited all buttons. My problem is if the learner clicks on the previous button, when they return to this slide, the next button never appears.  I tried a True/False variable for visited state - initiated when the user clicks on the Previous button.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Sheri

I take a different approach with my courses that might work for you.  I adjust the timeline for the slides to the approximate time I think a learner will need to be on that slide to complete the activities.  I then set the Navigation Restrictions in the Player to "Restricted."  That means that the Next button does not become available to them until the timeline completes.  I usually set the timeline for the shortest amount of time a learner will need to remain just in case someone is quick.  I figure it's their fault if they don't want to click on everything.  Just a thought.  I'm thinking through how to fix this the way you are doing it.

We do the same thing all the time and it usually works. Hard to tell what you have programmed without seeing your file or a sample set of slides.

Our approach has been to set a T/F variable for the slide. Example: If there are 3 things on the slide that the user must view, then once those items are viewed we set the variable to True and note that in a trigger for the Next button. Something like, "Change state of Next button to Normal, when the timelines starts, on condition "Variable" = True. So when you return to the slide the Next button will show up.

If you post a sample file someone can help troubleshoot your issue or point you in the right direction.

Thank you.  It took me several times but I finally got it to work as expected.  I failed to notice you said "timeline starts" and then getting the triggers in the right order which I felt I tried the way it ended but maybe it was when I had a wrong trigger.  I did get it working so now to go update the other slides.  Again, thanks.
