Images and media missing/corrupt in Storyline 2

Mar 11, 2017

I've been working on a course for 6 months now, and the client recently decided to split it in two. I split it, and then had to copy over one scene to the other "half" after I had split it. Unfortunately several images, 2 videos, and 2 audio files became wonky. They might show in the preview panel on the left - but not on screen or in published file. I tried to do a "change picture" but it would not do a direct change picture from the same source file - UNLESS I changed the name of the source file. Strangely, the audio that corrupted still showed that there was audio on the timeline, but no bar appeared to control it - just the label "audio 4".  I'm going to be working on this file for a couple more months now and CANNOT keep redoing weeks' worth of fixes if it corrupts or has some weird memory cache issue again. I tried everything - tried created a new storyline file and importing the scene from the good "original" file. I tried copying over the scenes in question again in new file. The only thing that worked was finding the source file - renaming it - and doing a change picture. The video and audio that was MIA had to be deleted and reinserted again.  Help!

Yikes! So sorry this is giving you headaches, Kimberly. It sounds like you've already tried quite a bit of troubleshooting on your own without much luck. Aside from what you've already done, my first thought would be to go back to the original "good" file, do a "Save As", and then remove anything from the new file that shouldn't be included in the split.

You may also still be able to find an older working version of your file in your temp files. Here's how to check:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

File corruption can happen, even in the best software, and even if you’re following all the recommended best practices. It’s not just a software crash that could wipe out or damage project files; it could be a power outage, your computer crashing, or even just the size of your project file, as very large files have a higher risk of corrupting. Here are a few steps you can follow to prevent this from happening again in the future.
