Anybody worked out how to get a transparent video into Storyline, then published with the transparency intact??
I have a video rendered from After Effects (as an AVI & FLV) which has a transparent background. Once imported, Storyline doesnt seem to recognise the video's transparency layer and appears as a solid black or white coloured background.
Storyline says it handles FLVs with an alpha transparency. Has anyone cracked it?
Those files are supported in the Flash output and while using the Articulate Mobile player on iOS/Android devices. They are not supported with HTML5 output as Katie shared above.
The reason for my question was that I had an .avi file (not an .flv file) that I was told had a transparent background that was not showing up in the Storyline editing environment as transparent. I'll keep trying.
As far as output goes, you state transparent .avi files are not supported with HTML5 output. What about the option shown as Video in the Publish dialog?
FLV videos with alpha channel transparency are supported in Storyline 360 Flash and Articulate Mobile Player output but not HTML5 output.
I think we overlooked that you specifically asked about .avi files, so thank you for clarifying that fact.
As far as what works when using the Publish to Video setting, please take a look at this document as many of the interactive elements will not be included in the output.
Hi Leslie. Thanks for acknowledging the omission concerning .avi files. Do you have a response as to whether or not .avi files saved with alpha channel transparency can be incorporated into a story and have their transparency preserved?
Concerning the document you linked to, I had previously reviewed it. I'm not concerned about loosing any interactive elements. I'm only interested in what would happen to the hopefully supported alpha channel transparency .avi file when publishing as a video.
No worries and I should have been more explicit in my reply regarding the .avi files.
It is .flv files that we have support for and not .avi, so how that content is published is not the issue. I just wanted to be sure to address your additional question but didn't make the relevant connection.
Hopefully, you will be able to convert your .avi file to .flv to use it within Storyline as you wish.
Thanks so much for both the response AND the responsiveness.
My video team tells me that neither Adobe Premier nor After Affects support export to .flv, but it looks like there are a lot of .avi to .flv converters out there. I'll give one of them a try.
Jim, ever figure it out? I'm trying to import AE files into Storyline (with transparent BG) but still comes up as black in Storyline and I'm running the current version, 360.
What's the file type you see from Adobe After Effects?
If it's an .AVI, I think there are a few converters around that can change it to an .FLV. We support .FLVs with alpha channel transparency, but not in the HTML5 output where it'll re-encode to an .MP4. This helpful article outlines how videos are encoded in Storyline!
.MP4/H.264 files won't support transparency in the same way that an .FLV video would with alpha channel. Another video format that does support transparency is .WEBM, but since IE, Safari and Mobile Safari do not support that, we haven't included it in Storyline or Studio.

I apologize for any confusion Jim.

There is a way to apply chroma key to videos in storyline 3?
Hello Sergio,
The same information holds true for Storyline 3 as well:
FLV videos with alpha channel transparency are supported in Storyline 3 Flash and Articulate Mobile Player output but not HTML5 output.
