Importing powerpoint presentations into Storyline

Oct 22, 2014

Hi all,

do you have an idea how large the ppt-file may be (or how many slides), because importing my 10 MB file (50 slides - powerpoint 2003 sp3) into Storyline 1 keeps on going ... without results after more than 2 hours ?

The screen remains stuck on 'Insert slides - Reading PowerPoint Project'.

Or do I have to remove some action settingsout of the original ppt-file first ?

Hi Thomas,

50 slides and 10 MB should be ok - but it's also dependent on your own system and memory allocation. Can you first confirm that your system meets the minimum system requirements detailed here and that you're working with all local project files?

If the behavior continues, can you share a copy of the powerpoint file with us here as well? The forums have around a 20 mb upload limit, so it should be ok.

Hi,

thanks for the replies. I checked it all : the ppt was from a local disk (D) ; the minimum system requirements are OK ; Flash is version 13. Today I got the following message in the middle of the conversion (see attachment).

I assume the ppt itself is the reason, but what specific, I don't know ...

Greetings and thanks for the feedback !

Hi Thomas,

The D drive is not typically a local drive - are you able to try from the C drive, either with the original powerpoint file or a brand new one that you've started on your C drive? You could also try importing the Powerpoint slides one or a few at a time to see if there is something specific on one of the slides that is causing problems with the import.

I have this happen to me quite often.  Sometimes it will read the PowerPoint file and sometimes it will not.  I am trying to upload a small 10 slide file today, and it will not read the file after about 5 attempts.  All files are located on the C: drive.  This is a frustrating aspect of Storyline for me.  I never know if it is going to upload from one time to the next.  Usually, I break down the PowerPoint into a smaller number of slides (sometimes 3-5 slides)  and it will start working.  I have tried the repair process, but it doesn't change the behavior.

Upon further checking, I see that my PowerPoint files are located on the D drive, but Storyline is located on the C drive.  However, I do not have rights to copy the PowerPoint to the C drive.  Maybe this is the culprit all along.  So, that means that either I have to get permission from our IS Administrator, or continue living with the hit and miss ability to import PowerPoints.

Hi Curtis,

Are the Powerpoint files on the D drive, or Powerpoint is installed on the D drive? If the latter, I'd suspect you could move the files - but maybe not depending on your security restrictions. You'll want to ensure you're working locally with all files that you're importing into Storyline and Storyline itself.

After 6-7 tries, suddenly it started importing them. This is typically what happens. It doesn't seem to work the first several times I try, then at some later time it will work fine. I just imported 3 PowerPoints successfully with no issues, but only after aborting 6 or so attempts throughout the morning. It is frustrating, but I can't seem to find anything to explain the behavior.

Yes, that is probably the culprit. I am going to check with our IS Administrator to see if I can get some flexibility so that this process is not such a hit and miss one. Thanks for your responses to this. The difference in where the application and where the actual files are makes the most sense as to why this process has been so frustrating.
