Importing storyline files into new project corrupts

Nov 18, 2019

I created 2 projects. Each has Storyline recordings. I import all of the scenes from one project to the other, no problem. When I try to preview the project, I get the message that something went wrong. I can save the project (with a unique name).

If I close Storyline 360 then open it and try to open the new file, I get: This project is invalid or corrupt and cannot be opened. It may have been created in an earlier version of Storyline.

How can I recover this file? Why will Storyline not allow me to import files without corrupting them?

Hi Jay,

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that you are running into this issue.

I first wanted to ensure that the courses are being worked on from your local hard drive
(C: drive). When working on a network drive or an external USB drive, this can lead to erratic behavior due to latency. For example, it could cause file corruption or prevent you from saving changes.

There is a chance that the file could be corrupt beyond recovery. However, let's see if we can locate a working version of your project in your temp files.

Here's how to check:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

We also have a recording of this workflow that you can review here.
