Inconsistent Triggers

Jul 30, 2015

I'm trying to figure out why my triggers are behaving so inconsistently. I know it may be the order but I do need all of the triggers to work right away.

Here is what the activity is supposed to do. Learners are supposed to select 7 of the careers and then each career is supposed to activate a description of the career focus on the next slide.

There is a variable called "choice count" that counts every selection of the check boxes and if the same check box is clicked again it subtracts a value of 1.

There are also category variables for each of the careers to count how many of that careers chosen were of a specific category.

There's also category variables of a true/false type that are supposed to help activate a graphic on the next slide if that career is selected.

I've been finding a huge host of problems ranging from the checkboxes not consistently working (they don't always add the value) and none of them seem to activate the graphic on the next slide.

I hope this makes sense. I would love for this to work as I believe my logic "works" and am wondering if this is simply due to the huge volume of triggers I've had to adhere to this.

If you guys could please help me I'd really appreciate it thanks.

Have a look athe the attached and see if that's what you wanted. I added logic to hide/show the Next button and adjusted the treiggers on the second slide. They didn't execute because the 'When Variable changes' condition is limited to the slide where the change actually happens. In your case, that's the first slide.

Cool thanks. The next button part works awesome!

I am just more having trouble with the first slide where I'm finding that the check boxes don't always immediately respond by adding or subtracting sometimes. I'm not sure if this has to do with the fact that I have these check boxes on a layer or that the time on the timeline has to be longer. I've worked with Captivate and sometimes there were issues with buttons/triggers because the timeline wasn't long enough. Do I need to pause the timeline on the base timeline or the layers or am I way off on my thoughts on this? I just need the checkboxes to consistently work properly because it either works fine but other times none of the check boxes work at all until later.

I think It could also be that for some reason the checkbox wants to change the state to selected when the mouse is over to the right... the cursor seems to go into the "pointer hand" state but won't activate the trigger. I don't believe the bounding box around the checkbox is extended so far to the right that it would cause the cursor to have the hover state so it's quite strange that it still happens...

Hi, Diane --

In addition to the suggestions Michael has made, I wanted to note that there are a few standard troubleshooting steps we can also try to see if there is any improvement. Please make sure you are working locally as described here, and you may want to try importing the file into a new file. If you are still having issues, you might want to try to repair Storyline. Also, could you please ensure that you are utilizing the most recent SL2 Update? Info on Update 5 can be found here
