Insert - Templates - Change where they're located

Apr 12, 2013

Hi

I would like to change where the storyline templates are saved as the folder that is there by default is on the network and then it just takes forever to open. Well, I assume it's because of that.

So, I would like to keep them on c: - but how do I change the setting in storyline. I just can't find the right place.

Can you help?

Thanks,

Kim

Hi Kim,

The default location shouldn't be on a network drive. Actually, we advise against working with files on external sources (network drives, USB drives, etc.).

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names.

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

Having said that, you should be able to choose where you save your .STORY files and your template files. Take a look at the following tutorial for more information:

Articulate Tutorials > Using and Creating Storyline Templates

Let me know if you have any other trouble working with the template files after saving them to your local hard drive.

Thanks!

Hi Christine,

But how do I change the default setting in Articulate? At the moment, it saves the files to K: (Network) and not to the c: drive. I've copied the templates over to c: but how do I now set it up that it automatically saves to there or more importantly automatically opens the templates from there?

Can you help?

Hi Kim!

It sounds like the template was saved on your K: drive at some point, so when that file is used it defaults to that location. When you insert a template into a Storyline project, it also adds a copy of the template to your template library. (The default location for Storyline templates is a folder called \My Articulate Projects\Storyline Templates.)

If your current installation is mapped to your K: (network) drive, that will be the location it pulls every time you want to save a file. While you can choose where to save your templates as you have been doing, it's not currently possible to change where the default location is installed. It would need to be a feature request

For now, when you're working with a file, you'll want to use the following method for saving the templates locally:

  1. Choose Save As.
  2. Navigate to the location where you want to save the file.
  3. Use the Save as type selector to choose Storyline Template (*.storytemplate).

You could also try reinstalling Storyline and see if it defaults back to your local drive, but unless this is something that's truly unmanageable for you, I would recommend sticking to the method above.

Thanks Kim!

Christine
