Have you clicked the "insert" key on your keyboard? If so, that will start writing over existing text when you begin typing - and to stop that behavior just click on the "insert" key again to go back to normal.
Thanks James for the update - and I'm glad a simple reboot solved the problem. You'll want to make sure that you're working with a local install of Storyline and working on local project files. If the behavior appears again in Storyline specifically I'd also suggest conducting the repair detailed here.

That's the first thing I thought of. Didn't work. Tried multiple times.
Rebooted and restarted just now. Seems to work, as usual.
