Insert WMV files into Storyline

Just a hunch, try downloading the free video converter Format Factory and convert your WMV into another WMV or maybe a AVI or a MOV.  Then try inserting the converted video.

Or, if you have a higher power video tool like Premeier, do the conversion there.

I agree with Gerry, try to convert your wmv files to an more standard format such as avi or mov. aside from Format factory, some other freebie also can do this job such as handbrake. i am using it.

OK, I'm trying to do this too (converting my WMV into another WMV or AVI)

Downloaded Format Factory, but WinZip didn't like the Zip file

Message was:

 Extracting to "C:\Users\jblackbourn\AppData\Local\Temp\wz8a46\"

 Use Path: yes Overlay Files: yes

 Irrecoverable Error: unknown exception.

So I downloaded the Wondershare Video Converter.

Setup completed, and I dragged my file into the Converter.

Now it shows that file as an MP4 file, and Storyline won't take that.

I didn't get any options to select which format I wanted or anything.

Can't find any information how to use this on the Online Help.

Can anyone help me with this?

Messing around I figured out how to change the file profile, so now the file is shown as a WMV file.

After conversion, I tried to import it into Storyline, but it still says (as above) that I need the latest version of Windows Media Player.

Then I changed the profile to AVI, figuring that you have to specify the profile of the converted file.

Converted the file, but Storyline still doesn't like it.

What else can I try?

Has there been any solution to this issue?  I have just run into the same error. 

Nothing so far. Articulate support people thought it was a problem with the way GoToMeeting creates the audio recording.

My workaround is to launch Insert > Record Screen in Storyline, then play my file while recording it in Storyline.

Was able to do this in a quiet room, but realized upon listening that the original has some background noise.

Not a perfect fix but will do for this assignment.

Troy and All,

The issue is Go2Meeting's proprietary codec that they use to compress the .wmv file.  You'll need to remove it before inserting the video file into Storyline.  There are several methods. 3 are listed here: http://glenndcitrix.wordpress.com/2012/02/10/3-ways-to-remove-the-gotomeeting-codec-from-your-recording/

For future reference, I'd recommend number 1 and 3 as they work with your G2M installation.

I also found this method and tested it on Troy's file. It worked great.

I just imported a 48 mb wmv file into Storyline.  I can preview the file and the wmv works.  However, when I publish the file to LMS the slide just comes up blank.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is happening?

The wmv will be converted to mp4 when it's published.  It could be that your server where the LMS resides doesn't have have the MP4 mime type enabled.  I'd check with your system admin to see if this is the case.

Thanks so much for this information! I'm wondering if you could help me, I tried the 3rd option listed and when I hit enter the batch file went away and nothing happened. I'm not understanding how I access this now stripped WMV file. The instructions seem incomplete. What should I have expected to happen after I hit the enter key?

No helpful solutions but I'm running into the same problem, error message saying the selected video could not be imported. It is a .mov file and I tested another file and it imported with no problem. Is there a file size limitation? I've been importing .mov files 2x a week since November and this is the 1st time I've encountered this error.

I haven't heard of a file size limit when importing a movie - but since you mentioned you're regularly able to import .mov files, it may be that particular file. Did you check that you're importing it from a local drive? Also, you may want to try and convert it using a tool such as Handbrake - as it may be a particular element of that file that is causing issues. 

if the file has been created the same way, I would check you have no special characters in the filename

Hi All: I run into this issue a lot when I have to insert a piece of media from a recorded conference call or webinar recording that is generated from Live Meeting or GoTo__. I believe that the .WMV file that is generated by LM or GTM is not a standard .WMV (I get the missing codecs error no matter which encoder or editor I use, even through CC Audition) so I tried making it a standard .WMV file first. Then, in order to more smoothly insert into Storyline and play well on devices, I encode the file as .MP4. 

Here's how I get around it: (It's a two-step encoding process)

1. Import the .WMV file that you obtained from your meeting software into Microsoft Expressions Encoder 4. I left the default settings. It will automatically detect the file, then analyze it, then it should be ready to encode with the output also being a .WMV file of the same name. 
2. Once you have the new .WMV file, launch Adobe Media Encoder, also leaving the default settings. Import/add to queue, and make sure the output file is going to be a .MP4 (I use the H.264 settings). 

Step 2 above is an extra step that I use because I don't have good luck importing large .WMV files into Storyline. It turns the .WMV into a .MP4 which is basically what Storyline does behind the scenes when you insert any other type of video file.
