Instructional Design and Copyright

Oct 14, 2016

I own a an e-learning creation, training and coaching company in Perth Western Australia called Noteworthy Business Solutions. Clients often ask me about the use of copyrighted content. I would like to share the advice I pass onto my clients.

Need to hit a deadline or finish a project but can’t find the content. Is your next stop (or always your first) google image or you tube? Many organisations have the outlook of – it’s being used internally so we will get away with it. This strategy or outlook depending on your view has an element of risk. But do Instructional designers have the time to understand the world of copyright?

To avoid the last minute dash for content which is copyrighted by someone else. Have a project plan for all your content so that everything is collated once the storyboard process has been completed and agreed. If you do want to use copyrighted material have time to approach the individuals or companies who own the material.

For Australian learning people have a look at courses similar to these to find out how to use copyrighted materials in a fair and constant way. http://www.copyright.org.au/acc_prod/ACC/Seminars/Copyright_Essentials_eLearning/ACC/Seminars/Copyright_Essentials_eLearning.aspx?hkey=ca6af266-3e23-41aa-bc7a-827bfa67b8ad
